The DGI offers hands-on, rigorous training for writers at all skill levels. Start with one of our foundational courses, examining the structure of plays or musicals. More experienced playwrights, lyricists, and composers hone their craft by participating in our writing workshops and masterclasses, led by top industry professionals.

We’ve designed a curriculum of classes –both online and in-person — that utilizes the talent of the very best of our prominent Institute playwriting and musical theatre faculty into a variety of extended educational classes (anything from a long weekend to something more rigorous that’s 6-10 weeks in duration). Though we will always give priority to Guild members (Guild members receiving a significant reduction in tuition), our classes are open for admission to all artists in the theatre community.

Designed for writers of every age and every level of skill in our profession, our classes will satisfy the very real needs of our members in terms of writing workshops, best practices, craft classes, and seminars. You’ll be given practical experience in everything from developing a full-length play with actors to dissecting basic dramatic structure to synopsis writing and the foundations of musical composition, lyric writing and dramatic structure in musical theatre.
