Editor’s Notes on the Translations and Adaptations Issue
Picture it: Arkansas. 1993 B.E. (before email). A rural college theatre department collects required reading lists from area high school English teachers. Many lists include The Canterbury Tales. The resourceful director of this theatre department adds it to the season. She sends announcements to the high schools. Teachers are excited. She orders a perusal copy of the rock musical adaptation, reads it and listens to the 1969 original Broadway cast recording starring Sandy Duncan. She is underwhelmed.
