You've taken the Artist as CEO workshop, and you now understand your basic rights as a playwright or musical theatre writer. But what do you do with your newfound knowledge? How can you make sure that you are advocating for yourself and your work, moving forward?
At this free pop-up clinic, you'll have the opportunity to ask Columbia law school students to help you navigate your specific questions about the legal nuances of writing for the theatre industry, including negotiations, compensation, billing, subsidiary rights, and changes to your work. This event is also your chance to meet one-on-one with someone who can provide a contract review, offer you a fair use evaluation of the real people in your script, draft a simple licensing agreement or collaboration agreement that is tailored to the specific needs of your situation, and more.
Each participating writer will receive a 20-minute slot with a law student. Please note that these are limited slots, available on a first come, first served basis.
The clinic's law students will be overseen Lynnise Pantin, Columbia University's Pritzker Pucker Family Clinical Professor of Transactional Law, and Jessica Lit, the Dramatists Guild Director of Business Affairs.
This legal clinic is presented by the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund and the Dramatists Guild of America, in partnership with Columbia University Entrepreneurship and Community Development Clinic. The Legal Clinic for Theatre Writing Students is expected to expand to NYU this spring.
