Nathan Tysen is a songwriter and performer whose recent work includes lyrics for the Broadway productions of Tuck Everlasting (music by Chris Miller) and Amélie (music and co-lyrics by Dan Messé). Other work with Miller includes lyrics for The Burnt Part Boys and Fugitive Songs (Cast albums, sheet music, and licensing available for all shows listed above). In 2014 he won both the Edward Kleban prize for most promising lyricist and the Fred Ebb award for excellence in musical theatre songwriting. Current projects include commissions from Lincoln Center Theater, Playwrights Horizons & TheatreWorks Silicon Valley. He is librettist and co-composer of the rock theatre piece Stillwater with his band Joe’s Pet Project. An accomplished writer and performer of children’s music, he and Miller have penned tunes for Sesame Street (2012 Daytime Emmy Award) Elmo’s World, The Electric Company, as well as written two circuses for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey, and an adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s picture book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick. Nathan was a contributing lyricist to the musical revue Stars of David, and has written material for the Broadway Inspirational Voices and BCEA’s Gypsy of the Year. With composer Ryan McCall, he wrote the book and lyrics to the family holiday musical Noah’s Art.  They also developed a unique hands-on songwriting workshop that has been presented to high school thespians at both state and international levels. Nathan has worked for over a decade writing and directing for the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts, helping to create over a dozen new musicals with young adults. His shows have been nominated for Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, and Lucille Lortel awards. He is the recipient of awards and grants from Jonathan Larson, Richard Rodgers, Daryl Roth, Kitty Carlisle Hart, ASCAP, and the NEA.
