Video Transcript: Amanda Green: When the pandemic brought about the shuttering of theaters nationwide, we responded by creating and producing The Dramatist LIVE!. We were hour-long shows cohosted by me.
Joey Stocks: And me.
C. Toy Johnson: And me. I’m Christine Toy Johnson. We talked to an array of dramatists, theater makers and artistic directors from all around the country and abroad. Our show ran from early March through July and we heard from several of you about the challenges and opportunities arising from the moment, how you were mourning canceled projects, getting by, adapting creative solutions, and your hopes for theater in the future.
Amanda Green: All 11 episodes are available on our website and YouTube.
Joey Stocks: Our July/August issue, The Season That Was Not, Was was written almost entirely by our hard-working regional reps celebrating the shows that happened and mourning those that didn’t.
Amanda Green: Fueled by current events and discussions during The Dramatist LIVE!, the committee collectively created The Call and Response issue in September (2020). And the first issue of 2021 paid tribute to the late great Terrence McNally and was guest edited by Len Aarons and Gretchen Cryer.
Joey Stocks: As citizens of Zoom, we’ve seen geographic boundaries dissolving and we are thrilled to welcome these new committee members from across the country.
Min Kahng: My name is Min Kahng and I’m from Alameda, California.
Larry Dean Harris: I’m Larry Dean Harris reporting live from Southern California.
Rhiana Yazzie: My name is Rhiana Yazzie and I live in the Twin Cities in Minnesota.
Idris Goodwin: Hi, I’m Idris Goodwin. I’m in the unceded territory of the Ute and Cheyenne, otherwise known as Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Joey Stocks: Looking for ways to reduce costs in these times, we will be releasing two issues of The Dramatist Online this summer.
Amanda Green: We’re excited that this online version will look great and be user-friendly and for the first time, select articles will be easily shareable. So we really hope to see more eyes on the magazine throughout the industry.
Joey Stocks: Hopefully, we’ll return to print in November with another first-time theme for us, The Opera issue.
Amanda Green: And in the coming year, we look forward to continuing to respond to the times, whatever they may be.
